Viking Skiing

Less than an hour away from Copenhagen, you’ll find a vibrant and living reenactment of life as it was lived before and during the Viking age, around the 6th to 8th century.

Lejre Museum is located in what use to be the absolute epicentre of the ancient Scandinavian Kingdom, in the days when Norway, Denmark and Sweden were still one nation ruled by Kings with names like Harold Bluetooth, Sweyn Forkbeard and Canute the Great - yes he who also ruled over the English.

This is also the place where you will find truly committed scientists, ready to walk the talk, such as Archaeologist Laurent Mazet, who believe it or not, is a specialist in Ski archaeology! The picture featured shows Laurent testing his reconstructed skiis and garb, in the beautiful snowy landscape surrounding the open air museum of Lejre. No modern bindings or high tech materials here.

We cannot offer you Viking Skiis but there’s still plenty of other authentic nordic Viking gear available for the curious. National Museum Viking Collection.
