The Weather Diaries

Wool, pearls, ice and mist

How is it that a few words can conjure up a whole universe of smell, sights and experiences? These four words are the intro to a wonderful exhibition, at the National Library in Copenhagen.

For the past two years, Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer have been travelling the North Atlantic - in the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland – exploring how local traditions and surroundings influence fashion designers such as Bibi Chemnitz, Barbara i Gongini and Steinunn.

The forever changing weather is a unique source of inspiration to these Nordic designers, where the isolation and bleak landscape kindle a rugged and fearless creativity. In one place, pearls are a means of expression, whilst in another it is wool. One landscape is moulded by the drama of ice, whilst in another it disappears in the mist. Wool. Pearls and mist conjure up a universe, which is truly Nordic culture.

Cooper & Gorfer are artists Sarah Cooper (USA, 1974) and Nina Gorfer (Austria, 1979). They are known for their folkloristic method and hybrid art-photography.This is their first exhibition in Denmark. The artists live and work in Gothenburg, Sweden.

PS For your own more mundane, yet authentic North Atlantic wool fashion accesory, why not a knitted tie from Iceland?
