Magic Mushrooms

The global phenomena of Harbour re-urbanisation has hit Denmark’s second largest city Aarhus, where big things are happening culturally.

Dokk1 is the the city’s new “Mediaspace” as they term it - where you can borrow books, watch films, listen to talks, collect your new passport – or simply drink coffee in the café and enjoy the view of the harbour.

To top it all off, the internationally renowned artist couple Elmgreen & Dragset have just won the first, largest and most building integrated artistic decoration. Named Magic Mushrooms, it an imaginary, exotic metropolis that is mounted upside down on the bottom of the ramp. The city is realistically reproduced in scale 1: 100 which is at approximately 11×25 meters and a height of up to 2.5 meters.

Elmgreen and Dragset said about their work:

“The dream of an imaginary world has existed at all times. Cities that can not be achieved in the physical sense, but which can only be grasped through our imagination. Our proposals for Dokk1 shows an architecture in architecture - A fantasy city that challenges the visitor’s perception and invites you to experience it all from new angles. “
