Cultural Monism

There is a line of thought that suggests art is “merely” a tool through which you live your life. Cultural monism is the idea that the digital and real world are indistinguishable. With the advent of google glass and other technological aids, we are essentially cyborgs and the quicker we accept the fact the quicker we get on with living our lives, instead of worrying about it!

Along comes a phenomenon, which intentionally or not seems to prove the fact. Museum selfies! Check it out on http://museumofselfies.tumblr.com/

The brainchild of Danish Olivia Muus, she visited the National Gallery of Denmark and started a viral movementm, which brings traditional art museums and the visitors together in a meaningful relationship thanks to – yes – the selfie.

No longer are the pieces of art something to be viewed. The smartphone, both as a tool and a 21st century artefact, combine to make art relevant and intimate.

We keep telling ourselves this – it’s an illusion – but it touches us. Art, not as the object but as the tool, within which we live our lives.
